If there are no streaming sites near you and your hospital is interested in linking to the Updates, please contact Perrin Grant; p.grant@rcpe.ac.uk

Please note that not all live-link sites are able to host the live EMUs in-person. If your local site is not hosting you can still access the EMU programme online from home.

The Evening Medical Updates (EMU) programme covers specialties, presentations and conditions included within the Internal Medicine Training (IMT) curriculum. Within these, we aim to cover topics from a range of clinical settings including the acute medical take, outpatients department, community care and critical care. We also have up to two non-clinical evening updates covering a range of topics, such as medical ethics, law and career resilience in medicine. Topics are covered in monthly updates between September and June of each academic year.

Each EMU session consists of three or four 30-minute presentations, and the programme allows time for discussion and questions.

Although aimed primarily at core trainees, Evening Medical Updates are open to all hospital doctors, GPs, other healthcare professionals, and medical students. They are free of charge to all RCPE Members and Fellows, and to attend at a live-link site (where available). There is a small fee for non-RCPE members who would like to watch the talks from home via individual access.

Updates are streamed live to a number of live-link sites around the UK and further afield, please see the map above for current active sites and the live-link tab on each event page. Your local site coordinator will be able to advise you on room locations and any other site specific information you need to know.

Frequently asked questions:

Can I attend an EMU online?

Yes! all of our EMUs are available to view online so that you can attend our events from anywhere, and in any time-zone. The talks for each EMU are also available to all delegates who have registered to view the EMUs online from home on-demand for 28 days. You can find out more via each individual event page.

What do I need to do to attend an EMU?

To attend you must register online via the RCPE events pages. Please click the gold 'book now' button on each event page, which will take you through to the registration page where you can register to attend. If you have yet to create one you will be prompted to create an account for the RCPE events pages, where you will be able to view all of your bookings.

It is important that you do register for each EMU you wish to attend, so that we know to send you the event access information (for online from home access) and your personal link to the online feedback survey, which you must complete in order to be issued with a CPD certificate. Online from home registration is open for the duration of the talks availability, and live-link site registration is open until 23:59 on the night of the live EMU.

If you are unable to attend an EMU please do let us know so that we can cancel your booking. This will also ensure that you won't receive feedback survey reminders for the event you were unable to attend.

How do I claim a CPD certificate?

Each EMU is worth 2 CPD credits, 1 credit per hour. In order to receive a CPD certificate from RCPE for attending an EMU you will need to complete the online feedback survey, and confirm your attendance within the survey.

The online feedback survey is open for 28 days following the EMU and all CPD certificates will be issued by RCPE via email once the online feedback survey has closed.

How can I ask a question during the EMUs?

You can ask questions during an EMU via Slido.com. Information regarding how to access Slido will be provided to you during the event and via email. We endeavour to answer as many questions as possible during the event, and any unanswered questions will be passed on to the speakers and their responses will be posted on this page following each EMU. Some of the talks will involved interactive voting and you will be invited to participate via Slido if available.

How do I prove attendance?

To be issued with a CPD certificate you need to confirm your attendance via the online feedback survey (please see CPD question above).

What if my local live-link site cancels the live-stream?

If your site cancels a particular EMU we will let those registered know as soon as possible as well as post the information on our event pages. We will also direct you to your next closest site or give you the option to view the EMU as an individual yourself.

How can I access past EMUs?

We record all of our Evening Medical Updates (unless a speaker requests otherwise). These recordings are made available on our RCPE Education Portal and are accessible to all RCPE Members and Fellows. You can find out more about our different Membership packages on our Membership pages.

How can I set up a site?

If your hospital or area does not currently webstream the EMU programme we would be delighted to help you set-up a new live-link site. There are a few requirements for setting-up a site, including, a suitable venue and equipment, publicity and acting as the site contact. To find out more please get in touch with Perrin Grant; p.grant@rcpe.ac.uk
