Care of the Elderly

RCPE Symposium Edinburgh

Date: Friday, 30 March 2012

Venue:

The Queen Mother Conference Centre
Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh
9 Queen Street
Edinburgh EH2 1JQ

Medicine for the Elderly is constantly evolving. Challenges to manage include the co-existence of different medical conditions in the same patient, the relative lack of evidence of efficacy and safety of several drugs with frequent off-label prescribing, and the increasing inter-individual biological variability. This is particularly so in the acute setting.

In order to recognize these challenges this meeting will focus on:

• Managing long-term conditions in the acute setting;

• Managing symptoms attributable to different medical conditions;

• Safety issues of commonly prescribed drugs and;

• Discussions on ‘real-life’ clinical case scenarios.

The symposium will be of benefit to geriatricians, general and acute medicine physicians, other specialties with close links with geriatric medicine (neurology, old age psychiatry), GPs, nurses and allied health professionals caring for patients with dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and cardio-respiratory conditions.
