Rheumatology

RCPE Symposium Edinburgh

Date: Wednesday, 19 September 2012

Venue:

The Queen Mother Conference Centre
Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh
9 Queen Street
Edinburgh EH2 1JQ

The earlier diagnosis, tight inflammation control, and biological era treatment regimes in rheumatoid arthritis are reducing disability outcomes. A new challenge is to target expensive and occasionally toxic biological treatments to those that have the greatest chance of responding and the lowest chance of side effects. This theme in rheumatoid arthritis is explored in the personalised medicine session 1. Improving patient safety and reducing drug toxicity exposure is a theme of the latest innovations in lupus nephritis management. The condition scleroderma has remained resistant to attempts at altering mortality outcomes but there might be hope on the horizon in session 2. The post lunch symposium session offers a choice of 2 of 3 small group practical sessions available in young adults’ transition rheumatology care, clinical assessment of the foot and ankle, and ultrasound of the foot and ankle. Alternatively you may choose to attend a lecture on the evidence base for ultrasound imaging in rheumatology. The final session 4 reviews the latest guidelines in a number of conditions (gout, polymyalgia rheumatica, and psoriatic arthritis) requiring shared care between rheumatology, dermatology, physiotherapy, dieticians, nurses, podiatrists and general practice.

We have invited presentations from both clinicians and scientists who, as well as being international experts in their fields, have the reputation for being clear and entertaining speakers. The organising committee would be delighted if delegates arrive prepared to join in the sessions with their questions and comments.
