Care of the Elderly

Date: Wednesday, 15 September 2010

Venue:

The Queen Mother Conference Centre
Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh
9 Queen Street
Edinburgh EH2 1JQ

The population is ageing. Health care professionals from a number of different specialities are responsible for the care of an increasing number of older people, many of whom are frail and have multiple physical and cognitive problems. This year’s symposium has been organised by ‘jobbing’ physicians with a major interest in the care of older people. The choice of topics has been guided by feedback from delegates from previous Care of the Elderly symposia.

TeleHealthCare in older people is an emerging area; we will explore the use of technology in the management of older people. Nutritional problems, both undernutrition and obesity, are common and important in older people and so we have two speakers addressing these important problems. Multidisciplinary care is a key theme in Medicine of the Elderly, and so our final session of the day will be led by a surgeon, anaesthetist and geriatrician who will explore how we can optimise surgical outcomes in older people.

This symposium will be relevant to any health professional involved in the care of older people. We look forward to welcoming you to Edinburgh.
