The Scottish Society for Physicians is looking forward to a hybrid meeting at the Townhouse Hotel in Melrose on 29 and 30 September. Our Fitzgerald Peel Lecturer is Dr Caroline Elton (an occupational psychologist and coach, and author of “Only Human – the Secret Lives of Doctors) speaking on “What makes medicine so demanding? Insights from Occupational Psychology”.

Instead of an after dinner speaker Dr John Reid, Chairman of the Trimontium Trust, will give a private tour of the newly opened Trimontium Museum (https://www.trimontium.co.uk); our trainee session (in person only) will be a workshop on “managing difficult conversations with colleagues”, run by Effective Communication for Healthcare (https://ec4h.org.uk/).

Melrose is a pleasant 25 minute walk or 5 minute taxi ride from the terminus of the beautiful Borders Railway atTweedbank. We have chosen Melrose for its ease of accessibility for those who do not wish to drive. However, Melrose does not have a single site that can accommodate the conference and provide overnight stays for all delegates and speakers in one site. We will list a variety of accommodation at varied prices should you wish to get ahead and book your room.

SSP Trainee Workshop - Thursday 29 September:

The Trainee session will be a workshop led by Effective Communication for Healthcare (EC4H). EC4H have tutors from across Scotland, all of whom are health care professionals. In this workshop, delegates will be asked to submit scenarios involving a difficult conversation with a colleague prior to the meeting. One of those scenarios will be used as the basis for the workshop. Tutors will play out the scenario, with opportunities for the delegates to contribute thoughts on techniques that went well and those that didn’t. Delegates will not be required to role play themselves. These workshops can help to give real experiential learning to use in real life situations in the future and are great fun. We have chosen the theme of a difficult conversation with a colleague, as this often seems to be an area that is not addressed in training – but these are the conversations that often cause us all more difficulty than difficult conversations with patients and relatives.

Please note that on occasion event programmes may be subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances.

Certificates

All relevant events are approved for Continuing Professional Development (CPD). To receive a CPD certificate delegates must have completed the online feedback survey.

Certificates cannot be issued after the survey has closed.

Membership to the SSP:

Membership is open to all NHS and Academic Physicians in General Medicine and its sub-specialties including associate specialists, specialist doctors and trainees. Associate membership is open to all Nurses & other Allied Health Professionals.

The present membership is around 500 and consists of current and retired physicians who are, or were, based in Scotland.
