Caring Human Factors - December Workshop

Overview

As humans we are all imperfect and we make mistakes. This one-day workshop will explore the emotional elements of human factors science, enabling us all to be kinder to ourselves and others.

Healthcare professionals are often on the receiving end of emotional challenges such as criticism, complaints or adverse events. This one-day workshop is relevant for all healthcare professionals and will provide a safe space to explore the way our brains process our emotions, including system 1 and 2 thinking, meeting difficult emotions, empathy and self-compassion and the power of forgiveness.

We will explore the work of Daniel Kahneman, Kristin Neff, Chris Germer, Brene Brown and Desmond Tutu to understand the theory of this work and relate our learning to practice. This new knowledge and skills will enable you to respond to difficult moments in your lives with kindness, care and compassion.

The workshop will be interactive and experiential in small groups and plenary. We will invite you to participate in exercises to relate your unique experiences to clinical practice using case studies, video, stories and poetry.

Meeting our own emotions, acknowledging our imperfections and being more forgiving of ourselves and others has been shown to improve our well-being.

"Don't Take It Personally" explores the importance of self-care and compassion in the face of complaint, effective clinical communication (and the importance of language), how looking after yourself is essential in being able to care for others, and the power of apology.

This event is open to health care professionals. If you are unsure about eligibility, or the correct fee category, please contact the RCPE member of staff responsible for the event (see Fees page).

All relevant events are approved for Continuing Professional Development (CPD). A certificate of attendance with CPD information will be issued electronically to individual delegates via email. Please note - certificates can only be issued to delegates who have attended and who's completed feedback forms have been received.

Please note that on occasion event programmes may be subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances.

A professional photographer may be in attendance at this event. Photographs may be used by the College in digital and printed publicity material. If you do not wish to be photographed, please let a member of staff know at the registration desk.

Access

A wheelchair lift and internal lift are in place at the College, allowing access to the conference centre and historic rooms. However, as a listed building, meeting rooms 4 & 5 have restricted access. For further information and assistance, please contact the Event Co-ordinator responsible for the event.

An induction loop system is available in the Great Hall and Conference Centre Auditorium.
