Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading infectious cause of illness and death worldwide. Global progress in TB control since the 1990s has been jeopardised in the last two years by the additional pressures presented by the Covid-19 pandemic. It is essential that healthcare communities worldwide regain focus and rebuild momentum in our collective efforts to tackle TB.
This particular challenge, in 2022, coincides directly with the 110th anniversary of the birth of Sir John Crofton, who was a pivotal figure in the fight against TB, both in Scotland and internationally, throughout the second half of the 20th Century. He qualified in medicine in 1936 and worked at the Brompton Hospital on the first clinical trials of streptomycin for TB treatment. In 1951, he moved to Edinburgh as Professor of Respiratory Diseases and Tuberculosis where he pioneered delivery of out-patient management for TB. His world-leading research on combination chemotherapy underpinned development of a treatment method which was adopted across Europe and North America, and still underpins approaches to anti-TB therapy today. He was President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh from 1973 to 1976
In commemoration of Sir John’s legacy, the College is delighted to host a TB-focussed symposium in Scotland, with a combination of leading local and international speakers.
The programme features prominent speakers on a diverse range of topics including medical history, epidemiology, laboratory and data science, and clinical medicine from the perspective of doctors, nurses, and patients.
This hybrid event will be relevant to an inter-disciplinary audience with an interest in TB control and global health, including clinicians of all grades and background, public health practitioners, specialist nurses, other allied health professionals, scientists and policymakers. We will also be hosting a drinks reception immedidately following the event to celevrate the life and work of Sir John Crofton, and all those attending in-person are most welcome to join us.
We look forward to receiving your registration.
