Overview

The annual Medical Trainee Conference, organised by the Trainees & Members’ Committee of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, takes place in Newcastle in January 2024. The Conference includes a variety of talks on medical presentations by expert speakers from across the UK.

This will be a hybrid event however we encourage attendance in-person where possible to facilitate networking and interactive discussion with colleagues and speakers.

We will begin the day covering challenging on-call situations, including the assessment and management of the distressed and agitated patient, before exploring an approach to the medical assessment of the unwell obstetrics patient, and learning how to rationalise medications in those with multiple co-morbidities. Before lunch, we will have a panel discussion on mistakes in medicine, led by three consultant physicians who will share their personal experiences before we have a group discussion on learning from errors.

In the afternoon, our expert haematologist will guide us through the assessment and management of myeloproliferative disorders in the elderly. Following this, we will discuss headaches and when they require further investigation, and finally we will hear some top tips on assessing palpitations and what ‘not to miss’ on the ECG.

The day will also include our popular clinical lessons for which trainees are invited to submit interesting case reports, alongside the 50th Sir John Halliday Croom Lecture and the RCPE College Journal Prize.

The day has been designed to be relevant to all grades of medical, nursing, scientific staff, allied health professionals and medical students. The event is free to attend for Collegiate, Associate, Foundation Members and Medical Students of the RCPE. We encourage our audience to join the event in person for a full day of learning, networking, and discussion. In addition, the event will be live streamed, allowing delegates to watch the presentations live or at their convenience for up to 28 days following the original broadcast. Delegates can continue to register for on-demand access only after the live event has taken place. Please note that access closes 28 days after the original broadcast, not after the point of booking.

Attendance options

RCPE are delighted that delegates can again, attend events in person at the venue. Delegates can book for in-person, attendance up until the day before/day of the event, or for online only attendance up until Friday 16 February. Trainees – Scotland Deanery medical specialty trainees can attend any number of eligible symposia for a one-off payment from their study leave budget (block grant scheme).

Free places

Unpaid post – Nil if confirmation of status provided a member of RCPE – please contact the Symposium Co-ordinator.

Refugee doctors – free places are available to refugee doctors who are Associate Members of the College. Associate Membership for refugee doctors is available free of charge. Please visit our website for instructions on how to join, and then apply to the Symposium Co-ordinator for your free place.

Cancellation policy

If you have to cancel your place within seven days of this event, we regret that we are unable to provide a refund. However, you may nominate someone else to take your place at the discretion of the event co-ordinator.

If you are no longer able to attend in-person, you can still view the event online. We will only reimburse the in-person fee under exceptional circumstances. The event will be available to view on-demand for 28 days after the live event, therefore, there is still opportunity to view the talks if you are not able to attend on the day.

In the event that the College is unable to host the in-person element of this event, all those registered to attend the College in-person will be reimbursed the additional in-person fee.

Please note that on occasion event programmes may be subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances.

Certificates

All relevant events are approved for Continuing Professional Development (CPD). To receive a CPD certificate delegates must have completed the online feedback survey. The survey will close 28 days after the original broadcast of the event, with certificates being issued shortly after this.

Certificates cannot be issued after the survey has closed.

On-demand Access

All presentations will be available to view on-demand by the second working day after the live event for 28 days, allowing you to catch-up in your own time. All delegates, including those attending in-person, will have access to view the talks on-demand again during this period.

Photography

A professional photographer may be in attendance at this event. Photographs may be used by the College in digital and printed publicity material. If you do not wish to be photographed, please let a member of staff know at the registration desk.
