It’s been quite a year for Respiratory Medicine in facing up to the Covid-19 Pandemic. This has brought challenges in delivering a service demanding minimal face-to-face contact and requiring maximum bed utility. Therefore, a session explores remote techniques for monitoring patients and another discusses which respiratory conditions can safely be managed on an out-patient basis. Necessity is the mother of invention - the Pandemic has inevitably brought permanent change to respiratory service delivery and we will explore the improvements that have occurred as a consequence of Covid-19.

Unexplained breathlessness is a frequent reason for referral to the Chest Clinic. Laryngeal dysfunction is often overlooked as a reason for breathlessness and a session will highlight how to diagnose and manage this. Another common cause of breathlessness is obesity and managing this can be a significant challenge. We will hear from an expert who has pioneered an evidence-based technique for weight loss.

Many patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) remain breathless despite optimal therapy. We will therefore explore the role of endobronchial lung volume reduction in COPD. Unfortunately, some patients have intractable breathlessness and we will hear from a palliative care physician regarding the role of the hospice in this situation.
