Overview

Gaining an understanding of the process, regulation and ethics of research is a core requirement for all higher specialist training courses. Research is a fundamental part of all NHS activity, and facilitation of research is an essential part of the role of all staff within the health service. All consultants, regardless of whether they are affiliated with a university, therefore require knowledge of the research process and experience in research participation.

This two-day course, which is aimed at early years medical trainees, particularly IMT2, IMT3 and ST4, will equip you with the knowledge of how research works – from study conception, through funding, conduct, analysis and dissemination of the results. Interactive group work will show you how to appraise evidence, write abstracts, review an ethics proposal and pitch a grant proposal. Whether you are thinking of embarking on research or wanting to gain the essential competencies for accreditation, this course will show you how you can engage with research, and trainees with recent research experience will share their stories of what it is like to make the jump from clinical work to the research arena.

15.30	Desiging a study Split into small groups to answer one of the suggested study questions and use the learning from the course to help design your study. You will be allocated a group and a question before the course. Allocate one group member as scribe to write a short summary in a word document. Further details will be given in the pre-course material. 1) Introduction: a few sentences of justification for your study 2) Methods: specify your study design, and outline PICO 3) Costs: consider what you will need to perform your study with a brief estimate of costs

All relevant events are approved for Continuing Professional Development (CPD). To receive a CPD certificate delegates must have completed the online feedback survey. The survey will close 28 days after the original broadcast of the event, with certificates being issued shortly after this.

A wheelchair lift and internal lift are in place at the College, allowing access to the conference centre and historic rooms.
